SPALDING 55,  Seton Keough 48:

As Maggie Morrison goes, so goes the Archbishop Spalding girls basketball team. Morrison scored just four points on 2-for-19 shooting when the Cavaliers fell to Seton Keough on Jan. 27. She bounced back in a big way yesterday by drilling four 3-pointers and finishing with 25 points to lead the Cavaliers over the Gators, 55-48, in an Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference semifinal.

Archbishop Spalding (21-4) advances to tomorrow's 1 p.m. championship game against St. Frances at UMBC.sk

"I didn't really worry about that. I was out here an hour before the game shooting and trying to get my rhythm, and it showed in today's game," she said. "I felt good and my teammates worked hard to get me open, so a lot of credit goes to them."

Morrison connected on her first 3-point attempt two minutes into the game, giving the Cavaliers a 5-0 lead and the Spalding star some early confidence. She hit another in the second quarter and finished the first half with nine points.

"She has a lot of pride. We didn't talk a lot about it, but I knew she wanted to make her mark and atone for that game," Spalding coach Bookie Rosemond said. "I called a couple of plays for her early because I wanted her to get off and get on a rhythm, and she hit them."

Freshman Camille Calhoun, starting for the first time this season, gave the Cavaliers a big lift by scoring six points in the second quarter, helping her team rally from a seven-point deficit. She finished with 11 points and was a major factor on the boards against Seton Keough's talented forward, Achiri Ade.

"She came in as a freshman in the biggest game any of us here has had for years and just really had a great game," Rosemond said.

Spalding never trailed in the second half, but never led by more than five points until midway through the fourth quarter. Morrison nailed a 3-pointer at the four-minute mark of the fourth to make it 50-44, but Seton Keough scored four quick points to cut the lead to two with 2:45 to play. Morrison found Calhoun down low with the shot clock winding down to make it 52-48 with 2:13 to play and the Cavaliers held the Gators scoreless the rest of the way to seal the win.

Spalding, which has no seniors, seemed to be the more poised team over the final two-plus minutes.

"They've played a lot of basketball - all of them - at the highest level, so they're ready," Rosemond said.

St. Frances, tomorrow's opponent, won the teams' two meetings during the regular season by 11 and nine points, but the Cavaliers were within five points after three quarters in both games.

"I've been here two years and we've played St. Frances four times and we've been in the game every single time, but in the fourth quarter we found a way to lose it," Rosemond said. "Hopefully, we learn from tonight and find a way to win."

Morrison leads No. 1 Spalding over No. 6 Seton Keough

Junior guard scores 21 points for Cavaliers

Special to The Baltimore Sun

December 19, 2009

For much of Friday night's Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference matchup, top-ranked Archbishop Spalding kept No. 6 Seton Keough off balance with its press and traps.

The Cavaliers also built their offense around junior guard Maggie Morrison, who dominated with her outside shooting and no-look passes under the basket. Host Spalding trailed only once and finished strong for a 59-42 victory, ending a seven-year losing streak to Seton Keough.

"They have a lot of size, and we don't. Our strength is team speed, so we wanted to go after them," Spalding coach Bookie Rosemond said. "They're a real good team, so we're really happy to get a victory. This was a huge win for our program."

Morrison, who is averaging 15.3 points, 5.0 assists and 3.4 steals per game, finished with 21 points. Brya Freeland added 16. Seton Keough was led by 6-foot forward Achiri Ade, who finished with 18 points.

A pair of free throws by Morrison gave Spalding (7-1 overall, 3-0 IAAM) a 23-12 lead with 4:18 left in the half. A 3-pointer by Freeland and a layup by Shaquila Curtis in the final 1:30 extended the Cavaliers' lead to 30-14 at the half.

The Gators (3-3, 2-2) regrouped and went on a 7-0 run to start the third quarter and held Spalding scoreless over a four-minute, 22-second span. Seton Keough allowed just two field goals and trailed 36-29 heading into the final period..

Spalding settled down and controlled most of the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers led 42-29 on a free throw from Morrison with 6:48 left in the game. A 3-pointer by Freeland with 59 seconds left increased the lead to 56-40 with 59 seconds remaining and sealed the game.

"One of the main things we practiced was keeping it up-tempo all game," Morrison said. "We definitely kept the intensity going."
