SAMUEL OGLES
LADY RAMS WINS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
After losing to Gwynn Park in the Championship
game last year, the Samuel Ogle Lady
Rams was determined to get back to
the Championship game and win the title this year. With three of
their starters returning (Aleah Epps, Camille Calhoun & Rebecca
Bolinger), the Lady Rams were on a mission this season. The team
was lead by their first year head coach Colleen Moore.
Samuel Ogle won the
2008-2009 Prince Georges County Middle School Girls
Basketball title on Saturday January 17th at
Prince Georges Community College’s
Novak Field House, over Gwynn Park
that had held the title for three consecutive years. Samuel Ogle
started the game out quickly, and was up at the half 12 to 8, Samuel
Ogle was in charge most of the game, but in the 4th quarter Gwynn
Park, not ready to give up their title, rallied for a comeback.
Gwynn Park’s Rachel
Smith hit a 3/pt with just over 2:00 minutes left in the game
to tie the score 27 to 27. Then Gwynn Park scored again to take the
lead for the first time 27 to 29. With 43/seconds left Aleah
drives to the lane and passes to Camille who scored to tie the game
29-29. Gwynn Park’s Caira Washington was fouled on a shot and made
one her free throws to take the lead 29-30 with 28.4. Aleah then
drives to the lane and with 6.5 seconds scores the game’s final
points and to take the lead 31-30. Gwynn Park tried to advance the
ball but missed a shot as the seconds expired.
Samuel Ogle finished the season
16-1. In addition to winning this championship, the team also won
the Team Sol Holiday Tournament earlier this month where Camille &
Aleah were voted to the Tournament
All-star team. The teams only lost came from their neighborhood
rival Benjamin Tasker in an overtime
thriller earlier in the season. Samuel Ogle also had great
assistance by using a balancing scoring attack with help from
Rebecca Bolinger and Lauren Lattimore. Ogle’s pressurized
defensive, which created several turnovers was lead by Ja’Seph
Smith, Crystal Anokam, Alesia Richardson, other contributors to the
team success were Nivene Sayyad, Victoria Boon, Nicole Ilechie, Oge
Ihegbe, Brianna Bogans, and Kanessa Walker.
In their march through the playoffs Samuel Ogle
had to face 3- previous unbeaten teams –
Robert Goddard, Benjamin Tasker & Gwynn Park.
With back to back Championship game
appearances, this 8th grade class will be missed
finishing 31-3 over the past two seasons.
