Coach of the Year
Fred Priester, Oakton: Priester led the smallish, star-less,
depth-challenged Cougars to a 30-1 record,
the Northern Region title and a Virginia AAA runner-up finish — the
program’s fourth state appearance
in nine years. He adjusted the team’s style this season to a faster
pace, had two freshmen and a sophomore
on the floor much of the time, and molded the team into one of the
top free throw shooting (70.5 percent)
and three-point shooting (190 made) squads in the area. Priester’s
teams have gone 347-59 in 15 seasons at
Oakton and 477-163 overall. Oakton finished No. 5 in the final Post
rankings.
